Behind the Party Zine #001: COVID-19 Edition

from Spontaneous Affinity

This zine exists to share the voices of the workers behind nightlife and dance music.

Behind every experience on the party spectrum, from the profound to the indulgent, are the workers making it happen. Many party consumers may not be aware of the labor that goes into making an event happen, let alone succeed. Event listings generally highlight the DJs performing, but without promoters, organizers, bartenders, visual and lighting designers, door workers, and many other roles, the party would never come to fruition.

This issue was first conceived as an emergency edition, expedited as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had and will continue to have a serious impact on nightlife workers and artists, and which in many cases threatens the spaces where parties have been able to happen. I want to acknowledge that the zine may already feel dated to some extent - it was sent to print a couple weeks before the June Bandcamp day, when the pandemic felt like the biggest issue on the forefront of our minds. Hopefully, this can still serve as a time capsule and help share perspectives on how to rebuild the industry.
